Petra Ratkovics is a speaker and PhD student.
Currently, I'm working on my PhD dissertation, and as part of it, I write articles and teach classes at my university. Subsequently, I was asked to be a leader of our small Bible study group, in which I've been a participant for a few years now.
After a few years of Bible class in primary school, I went to my church's summer camp for the first time. During the camp, I became close with members of the youth group and we chatted every night. I was amazed to see their love for God and for each other, and to hear their testimonies really got to my heart. I had heard of salvation and the meaning of the cross, but I never really understood it. But then one evening after worship the preacher spoke of Calvary and Jesus’s love. For the first time I understood God’s great love for me. I decided to follow and trust Him.
My parents divorced shortly after my conversion. That event made me depend on the only sure thing in my life: Jesus. After starting my university studies, I discovered more of the freedom I have in Christ. I got to know more believers from different walks of life. While writing my first research paper, I was faced with questions about my trust in God and His plan for me; after a long struggle, I found a deeper and more mature faith in Jesus.
ELF has been one of the highlights of my year. Being with other Christian brothers and sisters is such a unique, wonderful opportunity to build up another, to learn more, and to be encouraged. Thanks to the Forum, I'm much more connected to and grounded in the beauty and authority of Scripture; I got to know and keep in contact with a number of different Christian leaders who encourage me and advise me in my work. Through the Forum and the connections and friendships I've made there, I’ve had opportunities to go abroad and continue doing my research.
For the last five to eight years, I have led small groups at various conferences and camps. I have led a youth group for two years. I spent the last year in a church working as an assistant pastor.
ELF is always a week that I cherish - it truly helps me look at myself and assess my priorities and ministry. In addition, I love meeting brothers and sisters and talking with them, sharing ideas, pray together, and the Forum provides a unique opportunity for this.
