Since completing my Ph.D. in Bioethics in 2012, I have been active in writing and lecturing, mainly in Portuguese and Spanish-speaking countries, particularly on virtue ethics and whole-person medicine, but also on specific topics such as abortion, euthanasia, and homosexuality. I have also volunteered with PRIME (Partnerships in International Medical Education) in Mozambique and other countries. I have established a network of PRIME tutors/trainers in Portuguese-speaking countries. My dream is to take PRIME's vision of whole-person medicine and Kingdom values to every Portuguese-speaking African country, which could tremendously impact healthcare, making medicine more humane. I also preach in my local church and other churches.
During my teens in the early 1980s, I was invited to attend a Bible study at an Anglican Church in Porto led by a couple of missionaries sent by BCMS, now Crosslinks. I came to faith in Christ as my Lord and Savior and became an active church member.
Being involved in GBU (the Portuguese IFES), attending international meetings of ICMDA and CMF-UK, and becoming a PRIME tutor in 2007 have all been instrumental in my growth.
I hope to meet other committed Christians with whom I can pray and who can help develop my calling. I also hope to contribute my skills to the Forum. After attending the Forum in 2017, I was led to a better understanding of the power and influence of the gospel in every area of society.
Previously, I have been the chairman of Grupo Biblico Universitario (IFES) and ACEPS - Associacao Crista Evangelica de Profissionais de Saude (ICMDA) from 1997-2012. I am also a past member of the ICMDA European Committee.
There are many opportunities in medical schools in Portuguese-speaking African countries to speak openly about the Christian faith and medical and ethical issues from a Christian perspective. I want to use these open doors.
