Sergiy Godun is a Bible study leader in Ukraine.
When did you trust Christ?
Ever since my early childhood, I have gone to church with my mom. When I was 12 years old, a missionary came to our church and preached. In that moment, I felt a deep understanding that I needed to repent and welcome Jesus into my heart. When I did this, I felt extremely happy and light.
What have been the defining moments of your Christian walk?
All my life, I remember how different people invested in my growth. When I was young, I was in Sunday school and later in youth groups. One of my friends invited me to his home group. He always remembered me; he called to ask how I was doing. After my baptism, I came to Poland to study, and I have lived here since 2013. My friend Paweł helped me find a church. In a student group, I heard about how important it is to grow in Jesus and have a mentor. I asked my pastor about it, and some time later, he suggested we meet from time to time. Soon, we started meeting once a week, and I felt how quickly I was growing.
What do you hope to gain from participating?
I want to learn how to make disciples in a natural, God-centred way. My goal is to understand how to truly invest in people and identify the best ways to do so. I am also looking for resources to help me grow in this area and lead others effectively.
What is your ministry?
Currently, I lead a Bible study for non-religious people at Steiger and organise men's meetings in my church. Together with my friend Mark, I also lead a discipleship group for two guys who want to grow spiritually and know Jesus better. In my job at a care home, I take every opportunity to talk to people about God. I often pray for them because I realise this might be their last chance to hear the Gospel of salvation.
What is your leadership role or what were your past leadership roles?
I have served as a church leader and small-group leader, and I led the Alpha Course. For a few years, I was the associate pastor while the main pastor was on sabbatical. For several years, I also led two-week mission trips to Ukraine with the Choose Life mission. After the war in Ukraine started, I joined the staff of the SLOT organisation in Krakow, where I helped refugees and cooperated on various events for Ukrainians. I also do street evangelism with Steiger. Additionally, as part of The Gideons, I am involved in prison ministry, sharing the Gospel with prisoners.
Why should someone invest in your ministry?
Jesus changed my life and my heart, showed me a new reality, and gave me a huge opportunity to serve Him. I know that I will continue serving people no matter what, but this training will help me do it more effectively and with greater awareness.
