Ruth Mesfin Getachew leads the communications team at her church in Germany.
When did you trust Christ?
I made the decision to trust and follow Jesus during a time when I was seeking deeper meaning and purpose in my life. While I grew up in a Christian household, it was during a personal period of reflection and struggle that I truly understood what it meant to have a relationship with Him. Trying to find myself and my identity in work, life, and more, I felt God’s call to surrender and trust Him fully. Since then, my faith has shaped my values and how I approach my work, relationships, and life decisions.
What have been the defining moments of your Christian walk?
I have seen God lead me through mountains and valleys. I've seen His hand in my academic life, guiding me through it all. I completed my undergraduate studies at a highly esteemed university in Ethiopia, and now I am on the verge of completing my master's degree in Germany. Every day, God teaches, shapes, and prepares the way for me, revealing the greater purpose of my journey.
What do you hope to gain from participating?
My previous Year-Round Mentoring (YRM) inspired me to start the communication team at my church. From this YRM, I hope for even greater growth. I want to gain the accountability, mentorship, and encouragement needed to continue building the nonprofit vision God has placed on my heart. I want to be surrounded by people who will challenge me to keep growing, keep serving, and keep walking faithfully in my purpose so that the gifts and calling God has given me can continue to grow and impact others.
In addition, the European Leadership Forum (ELF) will provide me with unique tools for the involvement of young leaders within the church and spiritual community, which will be particularly beneficial.
What is your ministry?
I currently serve in the communication and community outreach team at my church, International Baptist Church of Bielefeld. Together with a team of four volunteers, we manage social media communication, newsletters, and help increase the visibility of church events and activities. Through this role, I have grown in leadership, teamwork, communication, and event coordination. I also enjoy mentoring and encouraging others, especially in creative and communication-related work.
What is your leadership role or what were your past leadership roles?
In my final year of high school, I was a youth leader, assisting the youth pastor. I went from a solitary role to contributing actively to the graduating committee. This gave me invaluable leadership skills and instilled a profound sense of responsibility as I led the graduating team through memorable milestones. In university, I was a part of local campus ministries.
Why should someone invest in your ministry?
Investing in me means investing in what God has called me to do. I am a Christian who grew up in Ethiopia and aspired to be in the decision-making rooms of Europe, in places like the headquarters of the United Nations, where being a Christian can be challenging. This program will equip me with solid answers that can withstand scrutiny and help me build a firm foundation. I am confident that investing in me means investing in His work in my life by providing me with the necessary tools to navigate challenges with the Lord by my side.
